Microsoft and Mojang had very different opinions on what a Minecraft website looked like. The ask was to balance between the vibrant Minecraft creator community, while promoting new products within the Minecraft ecosystem. My team and I worked tirelessly designing a system that both parties could come to the table and get behind. We worked closely with the Stockholm team at Mojang to stay true to the Minecraft look and feel. After a year of some hard work and collaboration we launched the Minecraft 2.0 site.

It was crucial that we blend the business goals and community highlights together, making it clear that Minecraft is nothing without it’s incredibly talented builders. Their accomplishments and creativity deserve to be on same hierarchical level as the marketing content.

Through collaboration with Mojang we found that many new users were confused on how to play Minecraft. Mojang felt that explaining Minecraft too explicitly would ruin the spirit of the community. This lead to game specific pages that carefully introduced concepts of the gameplay, while respecting users creativity to build in their own way.
